Web Site Development
Macromedia Dreamweaver and Fireworks are web design tools
that can be used to build web sites.
Web sites can vary from being simply an online brochure to massive interactive
E Commerce sites.
I have built three commercial sites in addition to this one. These sites
have, more or less, been online
advertising tools - although one of the sites is able to handle online orders
and can process credit
card payments.
CREDIT CARD TRANSACTIONS
This has been done in a very simple fashion whereby orders are submitted
using a form on the site.
These order details, along with credit card details, are emailed to the
site owners. The details are then
submitted to, and kept on, an Internet Server Providers secure server -
so the chance of credit card
fraud is very slim. This simple approach is reasonably easy to set up,
is not expensive and is endorsed
by the credit card companies and ISP's. It is an ideal approach for sites that
are not handling large
quantities of transactions. For those that are, a more automated approach would
be recommended.
DATABASE DRIVEN SITES
Automating e-commerce further involves using database driven sites. These
become slightly more complex
and are often built and administered by Internet Service Providers or organisations
that are set up for serving
to the Internet. Likewise, serving dynamic information eg. large catalogues
that change regularly, is done
using database driven web sites which are built and served by organisations
who serve to the Internet.
STATIC SITES
Web sites which, once built, will only change from time to time can be
built by any web developer and then
passed on to an organisation to be served on the web. In New Zealand some of
the more common organisations
are Xtra, Clearnet, Wave and Ihug. In addition to these are many other local
smaller ISP's and servers which
are equally good.
PRICE GUIDE
As a rough guide, having a site built can cost from NZ$1000.00 upwards
depending, of course, on what the
site involves. To buy your domain name costs around NZ$200.00 and to have your
site served to the internet
will cost around NZ$30.00 a month. These prices vary greatly and you should
find out in more detail what they
will be. You can find this out by contacting your Internet Service Provider,
or organisations that serve sites to
the internet. To see what domain names are available check out this site http://www.domainz.co.nz
