DEVELOPMENT OF DATABASE SYSTEMS - CORE BUSINESS :
I develop custom database solutions using Filemaker
Pro database software and/or
Real Basic code. Both
Apple Mac and Windows development is done at the same time. Primarily,
the systems I build are for business
models concentrating on logistical and financial administration. I have
an in depth understanding of what's
required of many Administration systems - having now built a good number for
a variety of clients, also
having had first hand experience in the ownership and runnng of a busy retail
business.

large manufacturing company.
- Inventory control software interfacing with hand held bar code scanners
for easy track and trace of an organization stock.
- A busy cafe and catering operation dealing with menu and recipe costing,
event organisation, financial analysis
and staff rosters etc.
- Retail till system drawing on and controlling stock inventory and implementing
bar code reading.
- Manufacturing Jeweler administration system.
- Childcare Centre administration system with a visual approach to forward
planning of roster, consideration of all
government requirements, and statistics, invoicing and reporting.
- Direct marketing database system. Tracking and analyzing of clients
and ordering activity, delivering data used for
reporting and driving an accounting package.
- Time and office management system for a busy architectural firm handling
time / cost analysis, invoicing and forward
planning.

Asset Depreciation commercial software package. Used now for a number of
years by NZ and Australian schools

A typical administration system might take around four weeks to complete,
with more complex systems taking longer.

When developing for the Macintosh platform applications can be easily
integrated, meaning a database can deliver
information which can then be used by an accounting package etc. This results
in a completely integrated system.
CUSTOM WRITTEN SOFTWARE
Custom written software is a great tool. Many software packages are available
to buy straight off the shelf, but often
these don't do what you're looking for in your particular business. Accounting
packages are very powerful tools, but they too
often don't perform the administrative and logistical tasks your looking
for.
Databases can provide powerful ways to capture, manage and then analyze
data produced in and by your business.
It is extremely satisfying to produce analysis figures for the first time for
a client, based on a set of data that has been
captured by a database system. Often the results are so revealing management
decisions are made to implement changes
in identified areas.
The purpose of these changes is to enhance performance
of a business system. To quote a cliché 'What you can measure
you can manage'. Database systems are highly effective at gathering and
measuring data.
A whole database needn't be written at once, it can be completed in stages.
In fact, this is often recommended - as sometimes
the picture changes along the way.
WEBSITE DESIGN
I have built three commercial sites in addition to this one. I have,
for some years now, used Photoshop, Illustrator and
other graphics programs. I am happy to look at building simple to moderate
web sites similair to those I have already completed.

MICROPROCESSORS
I have completed one substantial program using the Basic Stamp.
This has given
me a good understanding of programming microprocessors, and because the language
used is 'Basic', picking it up
has been pretty straight forward.
I am now set up with a 'Basic Compiler' and hardware for
programming PIC chips and others and so can move on
from the Stamp and take advantage of the more advanced language and power
of the PIC's.
